St Lucia Stars will face off Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 12th Match of Caribbean Premier League 2017 at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet in St Lucia. Both teams are yet to register a win this season, having lost three matches respectively. St Lucia Stars have the worst net run rate of all teams and after such a disastrous start to the tournament, it’s going to be difficult for them to find any motivation for their upcoming contests. Cricwizz takes a look at the strengths and weaknesses of both these teams.
St Lucia Stars: Strengths
Big names in the team: St Lucia Stars have a star studded line-up with the likes of Sammy, Watson, Akmal, Ryder, Samuels and McClenaghan. These players have the ability to win matches single handedly but somehow most of of them haven’t fired in the tournament so far.
Experienced skipper: Darren Sammy is a world class skipper when it comes to leading a side in the shortest format. Apart from his leadership qualities, Sammy is a brilliant all-rounder too. Coming down the order, Sammy can take down bowling attacks in a jiffy.
St Lucia Stars: Weaknesses
Haven’t clicked as a unit: Even after having such match winners in the team, St Lucia Stars are yet to win a game. Too many cooks spoil the broth, perhaps this is the case with the Stars. They need to fire as a unit and if they’re able to do so, they might be pull off a victory anytime soon.
Worst net run rate in the tournament: With a net rate of almost (-)3, Lucia Stars are in last spot when it comes to the points table. Amazon Warriors have lost all their three matches in the tournament too but their net run rate is far better than St Lucia Stars. Even a couple of successive wins in a row wouldn’t make much difference to that net run rate of St Lucia Stars.
St Lucia Stars Squad – Darren Sammy (capt), Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Eddie Leie, Obed McCoy, Kyle Mayers, Timil Patel, Shane Shillingford, Shane Watson, Sunil Ambris, Rahkeem Cornwall, Kamran Akmal, Keddy Lesporis, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor, Mitchell McClenaghan, Jesse Ryder.
Guyana Amazon Warriors: Strengths
Explosive openers: Walton and Guptill have the ability to give brisk starts and we got to see that in Guyana’s previous match against Knight Riders. The opening pair added 40-odd runs in the first 3 overs of the match but as soon as the partnership was broken, it was a downfall for the Amazon Warriors. Guptill as a skipper needs to be more responsible and convert his starts into 50-plus scores.
Presence of Afghan star Rashid Khan: Rashid Khan’s economy rate has been pretty impressive but the leggie has failed to take wickets and that has been the drawback for Guyana. If Rashid Khan is able to get wickets and strike at crucial intervals, Amazon Warriors have the chance to end up on the winning side.
Guyana Amazon Warriors: Weaknesses
Dropped catches: There have been a lot of misfields and dropped catches by Guyana so far in the tournament. A dropped catch can cost you a match, hence the Warriors need to cling on to those catches if they want results in their favor.
Fast bowlers have been lack-luster: Apart from Sohail Tanvir, rest of Guyana bowlers haven’t lived up to their expectations in the tournament. The only two bowlers in their team who have looked promising have been Tanvir and Rashid. Perhaps, they need to pick bowlers who can get the breakthroughs and restrict the flow of runs at the same time.
Guyana Amazon Warriors Squad – Martin Guptill (capt), Chadwick Walton, Rayad Emrit, Rashid Khan, Jason Mohammed, Steven Taylor, Veerasammy Permaul, Roshon Primus, Gajanand Singh, Assad Fudadin, Keon Joseph, Steven Jacobs, S Katwaroo, Ali Khan, Shimron Hetmye, Sohail Tanvir.
Match prediction – On paper, St Lucia Stars have a stronger team than Guyana Amazon Warriors but looking at the way Guptill played in the previous match, a big knock by the Warriors’ skipper is around the corner. Rashid Khan looks good to shine and take some wickets in this game too. Hence, Guyana Amazon Warriors have the edge over St Lucia Stars in this particular contest.
