England women’s World Cup-winning captain Heather Knight came back down to earth with a bump as her Western Storm side suffered a nine-wicket thrashing by the Southern Vipers in the opening match of this season’s English Twenty20 Super League on Thursday.
Knight led England to a thrilling victory over India in the World Cup final at Lord’s last month.
But it was a very different story at Southampton as reigning Super League champions Vipers, led by former England captain Charlotte Edwards, overpowered the Storm in a repeat of last season’s final.
Knight was bowled for just one by left-arm spinner Linsey Smith as her side slumped to 70 all out.
New Zealand captain Suzie Bates then added to her two wickets with 47 not out as the Vipers cruised to victory, finishing on 73 for one with 11 overs to spare.
