Afghanistan had a good last year where their players made and break a few limited-overs record. They too have a bight chance of doing the same in 2017 as well. Cricwizz takes a look at few records that Afghanistan players should chase in 2017.
A) Most sixes in T20Is: Last year, Mohammad Shahzad emerged the T20I cricketer to crack the most sixes (25) in this format. Virat Kohli, who was the best T20I batsman in 2016, had just 9 sixes to his credit. This year too, Shahzad should be able to live up to his reputation of hitting big sixes and top this category for the second consecutive year.
B) Most T20I runs: Shahzad was a surprise No 2 in the list of T20I cricketers who scored most runs in 2016. Fans will expect him to do a little better and hold the top spot. With Afghanistan playing only limited-overs format, it gives players like Shahzad to dominate the shorter format convincingly.
C) Most T20I wickets: Rashid Khan was the second best bowler in T20Is in 2016 with 23 wickets in 15 matches. Jasprit Bumrah of India headed the list in 2016 with 28 wickets in 21 T20Is. If Rashid had played that many T20Is as Bumrah in 2016, he would have topped the bowler’s list in 2016. However, Rashid has a golden opportunity to make it count in 2017. All the best, Rashid.
D) Maintain better success percentage in ODIs in 2017: Compared to T20Is, Afghanistan had an average performance in ODIs in 2016. They lost a few close matches or it would have been a different story for them in 2016 ODIs. Nevertheless, the new year marks a new beginning for Afghanistan players who should look for consistency in the 50-overs format.
E) Best cameo: Afghanistan players with both and ball came up with brilliant cameos in 2016. Shahzad’s 44-run knock against South Africa in World T20 was indeed special. Afghanistan are master in coming up with brilliant cameos out of nowhere and shock the opponent. Fans would be eager to see more such cameos like this from Afghanistan players in 2017.
